Water Tank Accessories in the UAE What You Need and Why

The Tank Is Only Part of the System

Most people focus entirely on the water tank itself when planning a water storage installation and then realize too late that the accessories are equally important. A 5,000-liter HDPE tank sitting on your rooftop is useless without the right pump, the right fittings, a functional level indicator, and a properly sealed cover.

Accessories also affect water quality, system efficiency, and how long your tank lasts. This guide covers every accessory category, what each one does, and what to look for when buying in the UAE.

1. Water Tank Covers and Lids

The lid is your first line of defense against contamination. In the UAE environment fine dust storms, insects, intense UV, extreme heat a poor lid can contaminate a clean tank within days.

What to Look For

Tight-sealing gasket: The lid seal must compress fully when the lid is closed, leaving no gap for insects, dust, or water to enter. In UAE conditions, rubber gaskets degrade from heat and UV cycling inspect and replace every 1 to 2 years.

UV-resistant material: The lid is the most UV-exposed part of the tank. Ensure the lid material is UV-stabilized.

Lockable closure: For commercial and public buildings, a lockable lid prevents tampering and is required under Dubai Municipality standards.

Wide access hatch: The access hatch must be large enough for a person to reach inside for cleaning with a long-handled brush, or large enough to enter for large tanks. Minimum 450mm diameter is the common standard; 600mm or larger is preferable.

Vented design: Most lids incorporate the air vent. Ensure the vent is positioned correctly (downward-facing opening, not upward-facing), fitted with a fine insect screen, and cannot be blocked by debris.

2. Pumps, Booster and Pressure Systems

For most UAE water tank installations, a pump is required. Rooftop tanks use a booster pump to push water up. Underground tanks use a pump to distribute water to the building.

Booster Pump (Rooftop Tank Supply)

Pushes water from the municipal supply point or ground level up to the rooftop tank. Key specifications:

  • Head pressure: Must overcome the vertical height difference between the pump and the tank. For a typical 2-storey Dubai villa, 20–30m head capacity is typically sufficient.
  • Flow rate: Must fill the tank fast enough to meet peak daily demand. 50–100 liters per minute is typical for residential.
  • Automatic operation: Most modern booster pumps include a pressure switch or float switch for automatic start/stop.

Pressure Pump Set (Underground Tank Distribution)

Draws water from the underground tank and pressurizes the building supply. A complete pressure pump set includes:

  • Centrifugal or submersible pump
  • Pressure vessel (expansion tank): Maintains system pressure without constant pump cycling. Essential for system longevity.
  • Pressure switch: Starts and stops the pump based on line pressure
  • Non-return valve: Prevents backflow
  • Control panel with overload protection

For UAE villa applications, a pressure pump set rated at 50–100 liters per minute and 4–6 bar pressure covers most requirements. Commercial buildings require engineering specification based on floor count and simultaneous demand calculation.

Cooling Fans for Water Tank Pumps

In UAE plant rooms and pump chambers, ambient temperatures can cause pump overheating. Small ventilation fans maintaining airflow around pump equipment are a worthwhile addition for any enclosed pump installation.

3. Float Valves (Ball Valves / Ballcocks)

The float valve controls water entry into the tank. When the tank is full, the float rises and closes the valve, stopping flow. When the tank empties, the float drops and opens the valve.

Float valves are one of the most maintenance-intensive components in a water tank system. In the UAE, common failure modes include:

  • Scale buildup from hard desalinated water causing the valve to stick open (tank overflows continuously) or stick closed (tank never fills)
  • Seal degradation from heat cycling
  • Float failure from UV exposure or physical damage

What to Look For in the UAE Market

  • Plastic body (CPVC or PP): Resists corrosion from UAE water chemistry. Avoid cheap metal float valves that corrode rapidly.
  • Replaceable seat and seal: Allows maintenance without full valve replacement
  • High-pressure rating: UAE municipal supply pressure can spike. Float valves should be rated for at least 10 bar working pressure.
  • Correct size: Match the float valve size to your tank inlet pipe (typically 1/2″ to 2″ for residential, larger for commercial)

Replace float valves proactively every 3–5 years in UAE conditions rather than waiting for failure.

4. Water Level Indicators

Knowing how much water is in your tank without opening it is surprisingly valuable especially for large rooftop or underground tanks. Level indicators also help detect if your float valve has failed (if the level is constantly at the top, the valve is stuck open; if it never rises to full, the valve may be stuck closed or the supply is interrupted).

Types Available

Mechanical float gauge: A simple float connected to a visible dial or pointer on the outside of the tank. No power required. Reliable. Limited to above-ground tanks where the gauge can be mounted on the tank wall.

Electronic level sensor: Ultrasonic or pressure-based sensors that transmit level data to a digital display, panel, or smartphone app. Useful for large commercial tanks, underground tanks, or any installation where the tank is not easily visible.

Sight glass: A transparent tube connected to inlet and outlet ports on the side of the tank. Water level in the tube mirrors the tank level. Simple and reliable for above-ground installations.

For UAE villa rooftop tanks, a simple sight glass or mechanical float gauge is sufficient. For commercial buildings with large GRP panel tanks or underground systems, an electronic level sensor connected to a building management panel is the professional standard.

5. Inlet Screens and Vent Screens

These are small but critical. The inlet screen prevents insects, larvae, and debris from entering the tank through the water inlet pipe. The vent screen does the same for the air vent.

In the UAE, the most common contaminants entering tanks through unscreened openings are:

  • Mosquito larvae: Aedes mosquitoes breed in standing water and enter through any unscreened opening
  • Fine dust and sand: UAE dust storms deposit fine particulate on any exposed surface; vents without screens allow this into the tank
  • Small insects and lizards: common in rooftop installations

Screens must be fine enough to prevent mosquito entry (maximum 1mm mesh) and made from stainless steel plastic mesh degrades from UAE UV within 1–2 years. Inspect and clean screens at every tank cleaning. Replace immediately if damaged.

6. Non-Return Valves (Check Valves)

A non-return valve on the tank outlet prevents water from flowing backward from the distribution system into the tank when the pump stops. This prevents contamination from the distribution system entering the stored water.

For any pressurized system underground tank with a pressure pump, rooftop tank with a booster pump a non-return valve is essential. Use a brass or stainless steel body check valve rated for the system’s working pressure.

7. Tank Cleaning Accessories

For proper tank maintenance, the right cleaning tools make the job significantly easier:

Long-handled brush (1.5–2m): Reaches corners and walls of large tanks without requiring entry. Non-metallic bristles metal scratches HDPE and GRP surfaces.

Submersible drainage pump: Removes the last water from the tank during draining. A small 250–500W submersible pump handles this in minutes rather than bailing by bucket.

Chlorine test strips or digital meter: Verifies residual chlorine levels in the tank and at taps post-disinfection. Essential for accurate disinfection and for confirming safe water levels before return to service.

Torch / headlamp: For inspecting tank interiors critical for spotting algae, sediment, or damage that is invisible without light.

8. Insulation and Heat Protection Products

Given UAE summer temperatures, heat protection accessories for rooftop tanks are practical investments:

Reflective foil wrap: Applied to the exterior of the tank, reflects solar radiation significantly. Reduces peak water temperature by 5–10°C compared to an unwrapped tank.

Shade structures: Steel or aluminium frame with shade netting or solid roofing positioned over the tank. Most effective heat protection measure available for existing installations.

Insulated tank jackets: Pre-fabricated foam insulation wraps designed to fit specific tank sizes. Available from specialist suppliers. Effective for tanks in direct sun.
